I Wasn’t Ready to Trade Location for Ownership

I’d Been Renting for Years

I’ve lived in Sydney most of my adult life — mainly in share houses around the inner suburbs.

I was paying around $450 a week at one point. Between rent and moving costs, it added up quickly.

I don’t regret renting. It gave me flexibility.

But after a while, I started questioning whether I wanted to keep doing it indefinitely.

I had a stable job. My income was growing. I was saving what I could each year.

It just didn’t feel like enough to buy alone in the areas I actually wanted to live.

The Lifestyle Dilemma

I didn’t want to move far out just to say I owned something.

I love the energy of Surry Hills — the walkability, the food, the community feel.

The idea of buying solo there felt unrealistic at my current income level.

At the same time, I wasn’t ready to compromise on lifestyle just to make ownership work on paper.

That’s where I felt stuck.

Rethinking “Ownership”

At some point I started asking:

What if ownership didn’t have to mean doing it alone?

Joint residency appealed to me because it was transparent — multiple people owning defined shares and living in the property together – like now as I house share – but we’d be owners.

Not a landlord arrangement.
Not silent investors.
Just co-owners sharing both the space and the responsibility.

I connected with two others who were thinking similarly.

We weren’t trying to game the system.

We just wanted to live where we wanted — without carrying the full weight of a Sydney terrace on our own.

It’s Not Forever — It’s Right Now

I don’t see this as a permanent arrangement.

In five to ten years, I might want to buy a place on my own.

But right now, this structure allows me to:

  • Live in the area I genuinely enjoy
  • Share financial responsibility
  • Participate in ownership and the benefits at a scale I’m comfortable with

It doesn’t remove risk.
It doesn’t guarantee outcomes.
And it requires trust and documentation.

But it feels aligned with this stage of my life.

Why It Works for Me

For me, joint residency isn’t about shortcuts.

It’s about balance.

I didn’t want to rent forever.
I didn’t want to overstretch financially.
And I didn’t want to compromise entirely on location.

This approach sits somewhere in the middle.

It may not suit everyone.
It involves complexity and shared decision-making.
But for now, it feels like forward movement — without feeling trapped.
